Currently bunch of tools are available in data recovery software category, mostly they are categorized under “File and disk management”, they still not have been able to achieve special appreciation in software industry as distinctive product category. The most popular desktop utilities have been Anti-Viruses, System optimization applications which are destined for safeguarding computer system from threats of viruses, Trojans and Malwares or by improving system performance by using bunch of optimization tool. However I still feel either data recovery services or software hasn’t got the recognition which it requires.

Lately, lots of data recovery service companies have started their operations around the globe, but if I recall the start of the millennium we had very few companies such as Kroll Ontrack, DriveSavers, Actionfront (Seagate Services now) etc providing data recovery services from physically or logically crashed drives. The type of data loss was limited to viruses and human errors, but the scenario has changed with invent of complex storage solutions designed by companies like EMC, Hitachi or NetApps etc.

Data loss has become more complex with the introduction of complex storage devices such as NAS and SAN and other external storages for SOHO users. The increase in USB interface has allowed manufacturers to develop external storage with USB interface internally having normal hard drive either SATA or an IDE. Large volume of data can be stored on these drives but USB interface has not been that comfortable with such large amount of data. These drives being external they still having same old drives with movable components and misuse or rough handling causes serious damage to these drives causing data loss.

The storage has become complex so as the threats to computer systems, today we have lot of threats other than viruses in the form malware’s, spywares and phishing techniques also hacking techniques have improved considerably. The improvement in such types of threats has seen in a rise of tools under the category of Anti-spyware and firewalls to protect computer systems. But data recovery techniques still haven’t received the recognition it deserves. Hopefully in future we would be having a special wing of computing to be known as “Data Recovery”, till than we all have to keep working hard to bring advance techniques to recover lost data.
