I used to consider this company with its products like Cpatain Nemo, explorer software for Novell servers. I think working with different file systems they got to a great extent needed experience to create an application for data recovery.
The inheritance of GetDataBack has been laid out on the software like Disk Explorer a hex viewer tool. Using this software for more than 3-4 years I got to know more about the usage of this application and got an idea about its recovery capabilities.
GetDataBack is available in two versions; one for recovering data from NTFS formatted drives and other one for recovering data from FAT partititons. I have no complaints about these two separate versions, but a user who is not much aware of the file system might find it difficult to select the file system and even might get confused when to use the application, in case of reformatting from one file system to another.
User Interface
This Delphi designed application presents extremely easy interface, but has some options for the advanced users as well. The initial wizard could be useful for the first time user. I liked the onscreen help which guides a user well to reach the recovery console.
Icons quality and screen design can be improved, but mostly I have felt that recovery result matter most for any data recovery software than its looks. But navigation and display of recovered is very important for any data recovery software, which GetDataBack was able to manage effortlessly.
Recovery capability
I would appreciate the developers for designing an application and also their research team for working out an algorithm which reads the file system and designs or creates its own virtual structure for directory entries to recover data. This technique is extremely helpful and has been thought by very few data recovery applications.
The software can easily handle complex recovery challenges of FAT & NTFS file systems which include recovery of deleted files, formatted drives and repartitioned drives. The complete scan mode would make some users impatient, but patience surely pays off with this application.
The only options which I feel is missing from this application is recovery of RAW data with the help of file signature search, popularly called as File Recovery. Apart from this feature I feel some of the options here and there if included can improve the performance of the software.
Pricing and licensing style, I feel is not very good and can be improved.
Overall, GetDataBack is a must try out option after any logical problem on Windows. I am sure this application would not disappoint it’s users in most of the cases.
